The secret to a happy life: Top 10 pearls of wisdom

The secret to a happy life: Top 10 pearls of wisdom

4 Mins

You might think it’s a bit late to be making New Year’s Resolutions but we say it’s never too late to make a change and we know 1,000 retirees that would agree with us on that one. A brand new survey commissioned by Skipton Building Society asked 1,000 over-65s to look back on their life so far and offer wellbeing guidance to younger generations. We took their most sagelike advice and picked out our top 10 pearls of wisdom. The secret to a happy life, it would seem, is pretty simple really…

Be kind

Remember your Ps and Qs, compliment others and don’t be afraid to carry out a random act of kindness for a complete stranger every now and again.

Don’t make decisions when you’re angry

When the red mist is descending it’s probably not the best time to be making decisions. Take a deep breath and count to 10.

Treat yourself once in a while

Open that bottle of bubbly on a Monday night because… well, why the hell not? It doesn’t hurt to treat yourself just once in a while.

Spend more time with the kids

Make time for quality time with your offspring before they fly the nest. They won’t be that young and cute forever.

Don’t worry about what others think

Different strokes for different folks and all that. Just do your own thing.

Get a hobby

Having a hobby broadens the mind so do whatever floats your boat – some of our favourite people are yoga-loving, blog-writing, saxophone-playing stamp collectors. Need some inspiration for a new hobby? Check out the Guinness World Records’ Best of 2016 video above for some ideas.

Always trust your gut instincts

You know that niggling feeling in the pit of your stomach? Go with it.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it

This can refer to anything from asking Siri to explain the plot of Inception, like in the video above, to asking a friend to come round with supplies because you’ve just been dumped and the only thing that’ll help is copious amounts of alcohol, a tub of Ben and Jerry’s and a good old cry,

Control your spending sprees

As appealing as sale bargains can be, you’ll be much happier if you stop wasting money on unnecessary stuff. Thnk about it, do you really neeeeeeed another little black dress? Hide the credit cards and unsubscribe from those tempting ‘deal of the day’ email alerts.

If you’re going to lose, make sure you lose gracefully

No one likes a sore loser so learn to resist the urge to flip the Monopoly board and kick over the table.
