How to define your interiors style

How to define your interiors style

Hollie Brooks, co-owner of award-winning online interiors boutique and blog MiaFleur.com talks décor…

I don’t like beige. Minimalism isn’t really my thing either – I find it cold and depressing. Instead, I love colour, quirk, frivolity, and a bit of plain old-fashioned eccentricity. But that’s what makes me smile – what about you?

Perhaps you love minimalism. Or beige. Or both. Great! Because you know what? It really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

Yes, experts can tell you what’s on trend at the moment, or what ‘goes’ with what. But if your home doesn’t feel like ‘you’, you’re not going to love it.

If you know what makes you smile, fill your house with it – be it bright colours, geometric patterns, or even empty surfaces. Learn to recognise what you like.

How? Here are my tips on finding your personal interiors style...

Assess your home

Start with your own home: look around you. What do you love? Write a list. What are you not so keen on? Write a list. Your lists will help you gradually phase out those ‘not-so-keen-on’ items, and replace them with things that make you smile.

Take note

Keep your style eye open and make note of things you love as soon as they crop up – you’ll forget otherwise. I like to use the notes section of my phone as it’s always close to hand.

Test your turn-offs

Part of defining your style is knowing what you really dislike. So next time you find yourself in a room you hate, ask yourself why you hate it. Chances are that what you love is the exact opposite.

Build a board

Starting building a Pinterest moodboard using your ‘interior love list’ notes, and the opposites to your interior hates as search terms. Call it ‘My Style’ and, if it helps you to pin more freely, make the board secret – as I said; it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks!
