The best adventure holidays of 2017

i-on accepts no responsibility for loss of earnings as a result of readers legging it from work, jumping on the first plane and jetting halfway across the world after reading this article. We thought we better get that disclaimer in before you check out our ultimate adventure holiday ideas because if these options don’t turn you into a recklessly spontaneous, thrill-seeking travel junkie, we don’t know what will.

Cycle up the world's largest active volcano in Hawaii

There's no sugar-coating it – this one’s a toughee. If you’re used to sitting at your desk 9-5, this holiday is about as far removed from your comfort zone as you can get. But if you think you’re up to the challenge, grab a bike and steer it along the roads of Hawaii’s Ironman bike course, through coffee plantations and up the world's largest active volcano, the 13,677ft Mauna Loa. It’s winding, it’s gruelling but bloody hell it’s worth it. And any saddle sores and blisters can be soothed in the heated tide pools of Kapoho.

Kayak through uninhabited islands in Thailand

The Gulf of Thailand is home to abundant coral and marine life, and what better way to experience it than snorkelling in the crystal clear waters. Intrepid explorers can then discover the uninhabited islands of Angthong Marine Park by kayak and kick back and relax on the idyllic beaches of Koh Samui. Thoughts of that daily commute are guaranteed to drift away.

Trek with gorillas in Rwanda

Make like David Attenborough and get back to nature in the lush forests of Rwanda. Trek through the trees and look out for elephants, buffalo and golden monkeys along the way. Here you’ll also see the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world. Beats staring at a computer screen any day.

Ski Big Sky, Montana

Rent a cabin in the Moonlight Basin and tackle the steep, open ski slopes of Montana’s Big Sky resort. We’re talking 5,800 acres and 4,350 feet of vertical for your freestyling pleasure. Book a private guide from Moonlight and you can ski the famed North Summit Snowfield and areas normally closed to the public, earning you serious bragging rights when you return to the office.

Hike across the Enchanted Valley in Argentina

Quite possibly the mother of all photo opportunities – you can hike and photograph your way through a variety of landscapes in Northwest Argentina including the Gorge of Arrows, Seven Colors Mountain, the Enchanted Valley in Los Cardones National Park and the Salinas Grandes salt flat. If you’re currently reading this whilst sat at your desk worrying about looming report deadlines, this adventure is sure to put everything into perspective.
