The UK has an embarrassing lack of knowledge of the USA

Think you know America? Think again...

With the Clinton / Trump election campaigns raging on, and every twist, turn and revelation keeping us guessing, all eyes are on America right now. Yet despite us Brits having a long history of lapping up everything America has to offer - from Hollywood blockbusters to gut-busting cheese burgers - it would appear we actually have an embarrassing lack of knowledge of the USA.

A survey of 1,000 UK residents, carried out on behalf of long haul holiday specialists Hayes and Jarvis, has revealed we don’t know as much as we like to think we do about our star-spangled friends across the pond. The survey spanned topics such as history, current affairs, geography, entertainment, food and drink and sport, and the results were pretty woeful. For example, 75% of British residents didn’t know when Dr Martin Luther King gave his famous ‘I have a dream’ speech. Here are three of our favourite mistakes from the results…

25% of people from Cambridge thought Kim Kardashian’s father was a former President of the United States.

60% of people from Manchester thought Michael Johnson was a basketball player.
