For many people around the world, haggis is just another of Scotland’s quirks along with ginger hair and Nessie. But on 25 January, haggis becomes the centrepiece in the celebration of an iconic Scottish figure, Robert Burns. So as you begin your ode, chew on these Burns Night tidbits…

1. The Burns Supper tradition was started by a group of Robbie’s closest friends who gathered on the fifth anniversary of his death to celebrate his life and works. It continues over 200 years later.

2. The poet was something of a lowlands lothario and may have fathered as many as 14 children with four different women.

3. Robbie was voted the Greatest Ever Scot by television viewers in a 2009 poll and Burns’ song Is There for Honest Poverty was used to open the new Scottish Parliament.

4. He is loved around the world and of all the non-religious statues on the earth, only Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus have more dedicated to them than Burns.

5. Poignantly, Burns’ youngest son Maxwell was born on the day of the poet’s funeral. Robbie’s wife could not go to the service.
