Broughty Ferry calling

Broughty Ferry calling

As a child, I would cry if our family holiday coincided with the Broughty Ferry Gala, a week long annual festival in the old fishing town on the outskirts of Dundee which is nothing short of magical. A regular event since the early 1900s, it is regarded as the foremost Summer community festival in Tayside. Now, as an adult with kids, I’m learning there’s plenty to keep us all happy.

As tradition has it, the Gala Week Fete kicks off proceedings at Castle Green Park - this year on Sunday 03 July from 1pm. Thousands gather to drink (there’s an adult only beer tent), laugh, dance and be merry. The event is free - as many are throughout the week - with collection buckets for local charities.

A large part of what makes the Gala special is its community spirit. Run by The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association, participating shops do quirky things like plant an odd object in their window display. Your job is to figure out what. A paintbrush in a baker’s window? A cherry in a clothes shop? Not as easy as and much more fun than it might sound.

There are several events every day, including sand sculpture and pavement drawing competitions, quiz night, bonnie babies contests, pet show, antiques roadshow, family fun nights and much more. The setting couldn’t be better - expansive, beautiful beaches, fine cafes, restaurants, bars and boutiques. If it’s scorchio, you won’t want to leave.

Broughty Ferry Gala Week runs from 03 to 10 July 2016. For full listings visit www.cometobroughty.co.uk.
