From handcrafted knitwear to contemporary prints and quirky jewellery, the Greater Grassmarket is a shopping paradise. We spend a day discovering some of these fascinating boutiques.

Edinburgh is a thriving hotspot of manufacturing and creativity and the Grassmarket is bursting at the seams with independent boutiques, unique to this beautiful area. Within the district there is a number of different shopping areas each with their own character. Victoria Street, for example, has the accolade of being one of the city’s most photographed streets and behind the colourful shop fronts lies a multitude of fascinating businesses.

Walker Slater (pictured above) is a premier destination for beautifully tailored clothing for men and women and further down the hill, The Red Door Gallery is one of the best places in town to source gifts, prints and accessories from upcoming designers, with many pieces having a distinctly local feel. Its next door neighbour, Museum Context, is another wonderful source of inspiration for the home; an Aladdin’s cave of hidden gems including retro accessories, furniture and globes. The street is also home to amazing delis, historic bookshops and stylish streetwear.

The changeable climate in Scotland means we are great fans of quality knitwear. In the heart of the Grassmarket Bill Baber celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and features a colourful range of knitwear produced on site. Joyce Forsyth Scottish Designer Knitwear (pictured above) also specialises in beautifully crafted knitwear, handmade in store, and Fabhatrix designs and produces custom made hats in a huge range of styles which cannot be found anywhere else.

We love accessories and are spoilt for choice with the variety on offer in this historic area. Family run jewellers, Clarksons, offers beautiful Celtic style and contemporary pieces which are made on site in the workshop above the shop, and we also love the playful, modern accessories in Hannah Zakari (pictured above) on Candlemaker Row which is just one of the many unique shops to be found on this historic street and is well worth a visit.
Did you know…? August is a fantastic time to visit the Grassmarket, with the Edinburgh Festival in full flow, the Saturday market doubles in size and is full of delicious produce and great gifts.
