The nation’s favourite home revealed
Thinking of updating your home decor? Rebecca McCosh looks to the tube for inspiration.
An unhealthy obsession with home interiors and an easily distracted mind is a nightmare combination, but it turns out I’m not the only one suffering from this affliction. There are thousands of us literally losing the plot… of our favourite TV programmes because we’re too distracted by the set design.
A new study of 2,000 adults conducted on behalf of Yale has unveiled the nation’s top 10 favourite fictional homes. The home in the top spot might surprise you. Put it this way, estate agents might describe the property as ‘Compact but deceptively roomy inside, with good use made of available space’…
10. The Good’s home: The Good Life
You can’t get a more wholesome home than Tom and Barbara’s. With Margo and Jerry just next door and an ample garden ideal for sustaining a self-sufficient lifestyle, it’s got it all.
9. Dr Frasier Crane’s penthouse: Frasier
A penthouse suite with stunning views of the Seattle skyline filled with highly collectable works of art and beautifully bespoke furniture (if you ignore Martin’s chair), we’ve got to hand it to Frasier, he really does have impeccable taste.
8. 221b Baker Street: Sherlock
This ramshackle London flat bears many marks of Sherlock’s investigations - mountains of books piled up on the floor and bullet holes in the walls - however it’s still an eccentrically covetable home.
7. Del Boy’s flat: Only Fools and Horses
Aesthetically, this Peckham high-rise flat wouldn’t be top of our list, but given how the London housing market is currently performing, we wouldn’t be surprised if Del Boy’s pad was now worth a small fortune.
6. Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment: Sex in the City
Now you’re talking. A Manhatten apartment with a huge closet full of designer clobber. That’s the dream right there.
5. Pemberley House: Pride & Prejudice
It’s believed that Jane Austen based her idea of Pemberley House, the residence of the dashing Mr Darcy, on the real-life Chatsworth House. It’s the perfect home if you fancy upgrading your regular dinner parties to grand stately balls.
4. Rachel and Monica’s apartment: Friends
Spotlessly clean at all times thanks to Monica’s OCD, the flat briefly changed hands after a fateful quiz game with Chandler and Joey in which Rachel incorrectly guessed Chandler’s job title was ‘transponster’.
3. Southfork Ranch: Dallas
The Ewing family home was the main setting for the '80s-tastic drama and is now a fully-fledged events venue, hosting the weddings of countless die-hard Dallas fans.
2. Downton Abbey: Downton Abbey
Who wouldn’t want to be Lord or Lady of this manor – the opulent rooms, the stunning grounds, the scandal in the servants’ quarters. The real life setting of Highclere Castle had a very different story - as of 2009, repairs needed for the entire estate were estimated to cost around £12million. However, due to the popularity of the TV series, the dramatic increase in the number of paying visitors has helped fund the major repairs.
1. The Tardis: Doctor Who
With the ability to transport its occupants to any point in time and space, the interior of a TARDIS (which incidentally stands for ‘Time And Relative Dimension In Space’), is much larger than it appears from the outside. This is because a tardis is "dimensionally transcendental", meaning that its exterior and interior exist in separate dimensions, of course.
