ScotRail’s steam train experience

ScotRail’s steam train experience

2 Mins

Boarding the 1927 Royal Scot at Edinburgh Waverley station felt a little like stepping on to a film set. The refurbished vintage carriages were laid with white linen tablecloths and fresh flowers, and there was steam billowing, whistles blowing and Prosecco flowing to add to the magic. As we thundered down the Borders Railway Line towards Tweedbank, the changing scenery of Edinburgh’s historical architecture, Midlothian’s open fields and the rolling hills of the Borders provided a stunning cinematic backdrop to our journey.

The train attracted a lot of attention – there were plenty of train-spotters eager to wave us off at the station and all along the journey there were photographers standing in fields and hanging off bridges to capture the steamy spectacle. We felt like movie stars. However, the best reactions came from people who were just going about their normal, everyday life, clearly not expecting to see a great big vintage steam train come chuffing past them. There were plenty of comedy double-takes, as if they thought it was some sort of CGI special effect. But this was better than a movie.

Steam trains are running from Edinburgh Waverley to Tweedbank every Sunday morning and evening until the end of September. A standard class adult ticket costs £55 and Premier Dining packages are available for £130 per adult. To book tickets visit www.scotrail.co.uk/steam-trains or call 01483 209 888.
