Lotte Wakeham: Theatre director of Wonderland

2 Mins

She’s the theatre director behind Wonderland, the new musical take on the magical story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

How good is Wonderland?

I think audiences will fall in love with the characters and songs. Our composer, Frank Wildhorn, started out in pop; he’s written hits for Whitney Houston and others and he's taken that talent and applied it to the wacky world of Lewis Carroll.

How did you get into directing?
When I was 16 the teacher who was supposed to be directing the school play got a promotion, which meant he was too busy to do the play. My drama teacher asked me if I wanted to have a go at directing it - which I did! I then went to university and carried on directing while I was there. I love having an idea for a show, assembling a great design team and a cast, then going into rehearsals and creating a piece of theatre.

Best production you’ve seen?
Hamilton
by Lin- Manuel Miranda, on Broadway. It's a show about the founding fathers of America, told through hip-hop and rap with a very diverse cast. The staging is stunning and the ambition of the writing is incredible. It's sort of exhausting to watch; the pace never lets up and you care so much about the characters.

Wonderland runs from 20 to 28 January at the Edinburgh Playhouse, visit www.wonderlandthemusical.com for info and tickets.
