The best St Andrew’s Day celebrations in Scotland

5 Mins

This year Scotland has been on top form; Andy Murray officially became the best tennis player in the world, Rent Boy, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie graced the silver screen once more, and sales of Irn Bru sky-rocketed in the Houses of Parliament.

To celebrate this year of achievements, we’ve rounded up five of the best St Andrew’s Day events in Scotland. Yes there’ll be tartan, bagpipes and ceilidh dancing but this St Andrews Day we'll also be breaking a world record, playing golf in the dark and busting out some Bollywood dance moves.

The Saltire Festival

Where: East Lothian
When: 24 November - 30 November 2016
What: The Saltire Festival will bring together a programme of Scottish literature, music, and comedy from the likes of  Fred MacAulay (pictured). Topping our list of must-have-a-go experiences is the is twilight golf session at Dunbar Golf Club featuring LED balls and markers. It sounds like a hoot even if your golfing skills are a little below par. For more information, check out our highlights HERE.

St Andrew’s Day celebrations in St Andrews

Where: St Andrews
When: 25 - 30 November 2016
What: Where better to enjoy the festivities than in the town of St Andrews itself? As well as music, talks, food and drink offerings a’plenty, revellers also have the chance to become a record breaker by taking part in the world’s largest St Andrew’s Day ceilidh. Just remember, dedication’s what you need if you wanna be a record breaker.

St Andrew’s Day Fusion Festival

Where: Dundee
When: 26 November 2016
What: If ceilidhs and bagpipes aren’t really your thing, how about mixing it up with Bollywood dancing, sitar playing and African drumming. This year, Dundee is celebrating the rich cultural diversity that makes Scotland what it is today. Join in the fusion fun at the special workshops taking place at the Marryat Hall.

Illumination: Harbour Festival of Light
