As I become more conscious about my meat, fish and dairy consumption,I’ve become a fan of the city’s vegetarian and vegan destinations. And Seeds for the Soul is a great vegan café in the heart of Bruntsfield that puts plant-based menus on the map.

Breakfast, lunch and sweet treats are all served with the emphasis on good food, using organic ingredients where possible,and making everything from scratch on the premises. Pancakes, a full cooked breakfast, hearty soups, tostini, soul bowls and vitamin-charged smoothies are all available, as well as freshly made cakes and scones.

We popped in for lunch during the week and it wasn’t long before all the tables filled up. It was hard to choose from the menu and in fear of food envy we eventually opted for a few items to share. The Yummy Toast, £4.50, of avocado on sourdough was delicious; the red onion, tomato and hemp seeds a nice contrast to the smooth avocado. The Vegan Poutine, £6.95, a feast of chips, cheese, seitan (vegan meat), lettuce, jalapenos and salsa was tasty and filling. To finish, we shared the homemade sweet pancakes with fresh fruit, cinnamon and coconut, £5.85,-definitely worth the experience.

The food here is so clean, fresh and tasty that it’s easy to forget the menu is 100 per cent vegan. Seeds for the Soul is on a mission to help make a difference to the planet starting with the way we eat. And, unless you’re a die-hard carnivore, it’s a great place to pop into for  a satisfying, quality bite to eat in Bruntsfield.
