What’s shakin’ at Epicurean?

First impressions speak volumes and my experience at Epicurean, the uber-stylish bar on the ground floor of the G&V Royal Mile Hotel, Edinburgh, was pitch perfect.

Greeted on arrival by a positively bouncing atmosphere, we were shown to our private table and, not ones to waste time, dove in and ordered a selection of Italian salami with homemade breads, £9.50, and the hot smoked salmon with goat’s cheese mousse and salted beetroot (a stand out), £9.50.

The bar is expertly tailored to whatever your mood with intimate private tables (ideal for dining), spacious booths (perfect for long overdue catch-ups between friends over a cocktail or two), and with plenty of space to stand or sit at the bar you’re afforded a prime view of all that the mixologists are shakin’ up.

The drinks menu is extensive and enticing in equal parts but professing our love for all things juniper, I chose a Miel Royale – a delicious Tanqueray No.10 cocktail with honey, made by the rooftop bees and served with chamomile sorbet and fresh honeycomb, as you do, £9. For my friend it was a Near Milngavie – Daffy’s gin and St. Germain elderflower liqueur made with fresh Greek basil from the hotel’s EvoGro hydroponic garden, £9.

Fully impressed with our choices so far, we went back for more and ordered a Hunter’s Rose (for me) and a Dragoncello (for her) – both pink, £9, and utterly delightful. The Dragoncello was a perfectly balanced combination of Aperol, tarragon and peach wine and was accompanied by a delicious spoonful of orange sorbet.

Whatever your tastes or indeed raison d'être, you will find something to suit you at Epicurean with its stylish yet laid back surroundings and spot-on selection of cocktails.
