Catherine Deveney, multi-award-winning journalist, feature writer and novelist, recalls memories of her all-time favourite winter reads.

Frenchman’s Creek by Daphne du Maurier

Catherine Deveney’s top winter reads

“I couldn’t wait for the school bell to signal my escape. Bored schoolgirl in an unruly class? No, I was ‘Miss’, their English teacher. But I was impatient to get back home to finish Daphne du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek, the most unlikely but spellbindingly romantic of books. It’s the tale of an aristocratic lady and an attractive French pirate. What’s not to like?”

Dusty Answer by Rosamond Lehmann

Catherine Deveney’s top winter reads

“A rainy Sunday afternoon. I was a teenager rifling through bookshelves for something to lose myself in. Dusty Answer was written in 1927, but from the very first paragraph I was mesmerised. A coming-of-age story, it’s full of love and teenage longing - just as I was. Some things don’t date.”

Ladder of Years by Ann Tyler

Catherine Deveney’s top winter reads

“Having just written my first novel about a woman who walks out of her life, the last thing I wanted to hear was that an internationally acclaimed writer written on the same subject. I read Ladder of Years with bated breath – and loved it. The treatment of the subject was entirely different. I learned a lot from that.”

Catherine’s latest novel, The Chrysalis, £8.99, is published by Old Street Publishing and available now.
