The future’s bright for The Fruitmarket Gallery

The Fruitmarket Gallery on Edinburgh’s Market Street has been given the go-ahead to expand into the neighbouring Electric Circus building, with construction expected to start in 2019. We caught up with Fiona Bradley, director of the Fruitmarket, to find out what’s happening now and next for the iconic art gallery…

What have you got coming up over the next couple of months?
Our exhibition of two South African artists, William Kentridge and Vivienne Koorland, runs until 19 February. Then we are presenting British artist Mark Wallinger’s first exhibition in Scotland.

Why is the Fruitmarket Gallery so special?
We programme a broad range of free events – school and youth workshops inspired by the exhibitions, and Literary Littles, a regular group for children and families run by the bookshop. There’s a monthly book group that meets in the café. And we host Markets in between exhibitions, allowing local designers and makers to showcase their work.

What would more space enable the gallery to do?
We work the space we have incredibly hard. The bookshop is bursting at the seams, and the café works miracles from the tiniest kitchen imaginable. We have no education space, so all workshops and events happen in the exhibitions – often very good fun, but challenging too. More space would enable us to show more art to people, with bigger galleries and some brand new spaces, such as a project room and library.

Best cake in the Fruitmarket café?
There are so many great cakes produced by Milk’s team but I am very partial to a breakfast muffin - the café now opens at 10am for breakfast every day.
