Turner in January, 01-31 January

For more than a hundred years, JMW Turner’s watercolours, as bequested by Henry Vaughan, have retained their vibrancy by only going on show throughout the month of January. Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
 

Picnic at Hanging Rock, 13-28 January

Joan Lindsay’s classic Australian horror mystery novel about three girls who vanished on a school trip in 1900, never to be seen again, comes to the Lyceum stage. Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh.
 

Celtic Connections, 19 January - 05 February

The Celtic musical diaspora is celebrated once more with arguably the UK’s biggest winter musical festival, featuring Laura Marling with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Olivia Newton John, Fairport Convention, Anna Meredith and Karine Polwart’s beautiful theatre show Wind Resistance. Various venues, Glasgow.
 

Black Sabbath, 24 January

Birmingham metal icons Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler are back to rock out for what they tell us will be the final time. Hydro, Glasgow.
 

Manipulate Festival, 27 January - 05 February 

This tenth year of the annual puppet animation festival (main image) brings more than 20 new and returning pieces for performance and film. Based at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, work is also showing in Aberdeen, Bristol and Norwich. Various venues, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
