This year Scotland has been on top form; Andy Murray officially became the best tennis player in the world, Rent Boy, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie graced the silver screen once more, and sales of Irn Bru sky-rocketed in the Houses of Parliament.

To celebrate this year of achievements, Rebecca McCosh rounds up five of the best St Andrew’s Day events in Scotland. Yes there’ll be tartan, bagpipes and ceilidh dancing but this St Andrew's Day we'll also be breaking a world record, playing golf in the dark and busting out some Bollywood dance moves.

What: The Saltire Festival will bring together a programme of Scottish literature, music, and comedy from the likes of  Fred MacAulay (pictured). Topping our list of must-have-a-go experiences is the is twilight golf session at Dunbar Golf Club featuring LED balls and markers. What: Where better to enjoy the festivities than in the town of St Andrews itself? As well as music, talks, food and drink offerings a’plenty, revellers also have the chance to become a record breaker by taking part in the world’s largest St Andrew’s Day ceilidh. Just remember, dedication’s what you need if you wanna be a record breaker.

What: If ceilidhs and bagpipes aren’t really your thing, how about mixing it up with Bollywood dancing, sitar playing and African drumming. This year, Dundee is celebrating the rich cultural diversity that makes Scotland what it is today. Join in the fusion fun at the special workshops taking place at the Marryat Hall.

Glasgow’s St Andrew’s Day Torchlight Parade

What: New for 2016, Glasgow’s West End will be the setting for a family friendly torchlight procession. Kicking off at Kelvingrove Park and meandering along to the Riverside Museum, there’ll be live music along the way as well as a dramatic bonfire and fireworks finale.

When: 30 November - 03 December 2016
What: To mark the end of Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, Irvine is going all out with a four-day art and light spectacular. Follow the free illumination Trail along the river and look out for hundreds of brightly coloured origami boats and butterflies, hand-crafted by international artists Aether & Hemera.
