Vincent Bell Hairdressing support mental health awareness with ‘In It Together’ campaign

According to Mind mental health charity, 1 in 4 people in the UK experience poor mental health each year making it likely that you know someone who has, is or will. In the face of such statistics and inspired by a recent visit from a lady who suffered from extreme anxiety, husband and wife team of Vincent Bell Hairdressing were inspired to spread awareness of mental health within the salon environment and launched ‘In It Together’.

“Everybody has the right to feel good about themselves and often this is connected to having your hair done. If someones mental health is preventing them from visiting a salon then we need to address the situation and create safe, welcoming spaces that everyone can visit.” Vincent Bell

As part of the campaign the salon created ‘quiet’ areas where appointments could be taken at the client’s pace, in a calmer, more serene environment. It has been suggested that due to the emotional detachment between a client and hairdresser, people often feel comfortable talking about their issues and problems. With the help of life coach Lynette Gray, the team also learnt to engage with their own mental health concerns and how to speak with clients that might be struggling.

“We’ve been touched by mental health issues ourselves. Family, friends, team members and clients - it affects everyone these days. We want to do something that would let those suffering know they can come to us and we’ll offer them an island of escapism.” Karen Bell
